MEWP Safety & Maintenance Regulations

Powered access platforms must be kept in premium working condition at all times. Regular servicing and inspections are not just good practice — they are a legal requirement for all lifting equipment under UK law. Keeping your MEWPs well-maintained also extends their lifespan and reduces the risk of costly downtime.

What is LOLER?

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) places duties on all companies that own, operate or have control over lifting equipment. Under LOLER:

All lifting equipment must be safe to use, with precautions taken to eliminate or reduce risk.

Access platforms must be thoroughly inspected before use.

Platforms used to lift people must be examined every six months; other lifting equipment every 12 months.

All inspections and servicing must be carried out by a qualified person, who submits a full report to the platform owner.

What is PUWER?

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) regulates safety standards for equipment used in work environments. Under PUWER:

Access platforms must be suitable for their intended use and maintained in a safe condition.

MEWPs must be inspected regularly to ensure they remain in safe working order.

Platforms used for carrying people must be fit for purpose, with risks to operators and bystanders minimised.

Aftercare FAQs

How often does my access platform need to be inspected?

Under LOLER 1998, powered access platforms used for lifting people must undergo a thorough examination at least every six months, or more frequently if determined by a competent person. Material lifts and other lifting equipment should be inspected at least every 12 months.
